Adding Salt to Water Makes It Boil Faster

Salt raises the boiling point, making water take longer to boil

Kids were told that sprinkling salt into water would make it boil faster, based on misunderstandings of cooking.

Salt increases the boiling point of water (called boiling point elevation), requiring higher temperatures and taking longer to boil, not faster. The myth likely arose from the fact that salted water cooks pasta faster (because salt seasons the pasta and increases cooking time due to the raised boiling point), which people misinterpreted as the water boiling faster. Adding salt to already-boiling water has minimal effect on the boiling time.
