Cleopatra VII was of Macedonian Greek descent, part of the Ptolemaic dynasty established by one of Alexander the Great's generals after his conquest. While she ruled Egypt, she was ethnically Greek and spoke Greek as her primary language. She learned Egyptian as part of her royal education, making her exceptional among Ptolemaic rulers.
