Random strangers hand out Halloween candy containing razor blades, needles, and poison to injure children.
Extensive research by Joel Best and other scholars found no verified cases of strangers poisoning or injuring trick-or-treaters with contaminated candy. The panic began in the 1970s, partially fuelled by media sensationalism and a few hoaxes. Reported incidents were either hoaxes by family members or mundane findings with no actual injuries.
